The successful Los Angeles alternative R&B band Moonchild, with one of the band members being Latvian musician Andris Mattson, will visit the Palladium Concert Hall for the first time on September 3rd. Tickets here.
The Los Angeles trio Moonchild consists of Amber Navran, Max Bryk and also Latvian multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and producer Andris Mattson, who has gained considerable recognition in the field of soul music, R&B and jazz music. The band Moonchild started their musical work thanks to the soloist Amber Navran's EP album "Speak Up", which was made while still studying. Back then, on an album presentation tour with concerts in the United States, Amber approached his band members to accompany the album presentation, and during the tour the musicians found that they had a very similar musical taste, which resulted in forming a band. Initially, the trio focused on the genre of jazz and soul music, but during their 10 years of existence, in search of new means of musical expression and musical influences, they have come to music that can be best described as an alternative R&B.
Moonchild has collaborated and toured with such well-known artists as Kamasi Washington, Stevie Wonder, The Internet, Jill Scott and received iconic music support from Robert Glasper and Laura Mvula to James Poyser, Jazzy Jeff, 9th Wonder and Tyler, The Creator.
Moonchild embodies a mix of sophisticated, progressive music with a classic calm sound. In November 2021, the band announced the album Starfruit, which they call their own anniversary album. The result of ten years spent working and growing together, ‘Starfruit’ showcases the respect, musical understanding, and love the trio have, both for each other and for the noteworthy list of collaborators featured on the album. Bringing a host of beautiful melodies and personal lyrics, ‘Starfruit’ beholds offerings from Lalah Hathaway, Alex Isley, Tank and The Bangas, Rapsody, Ill Camille, Mumu Fresh, Chantae Cann and Josh Johnson.
“This is our 5th album, which felt like a big milestone to us. They all added their magic touch to the songs and really brought the music to a new and special place,” Amber muses.
Here's what they say about the single "Too Good".
“Too Good” is about being wrapped up in the high of love, and yet fighting off that sneaking suspicion that something terrible is around the corner, waiting to take it all away,” multi-instrumentalist, producer, vocalist, and lyricist Amber Navran explains.
Taking its name from the first line of the track, “Too Good” is built around the chorus. Complementary instrumentation from Mattson in the form of nylon guitars, drum fills and a flugel and flute horn line provide the backdrop to a memorable hook from Navran – “Ooh you’re like a dream come true / Waiting for the next shoe to drop,” – alongside an organic progression of chords, written by Max Bryk. “They’re so pretty and Amber’s vocals skate on them effortlessly,” Andris Mattson enthuses.
