Estonian progressive pop outfit Neon Fir has released their self-titled debut album. The long-awaited first full-length record from the eclectic group continues their journey through the multi-faceted and detail-oriented new school of alternative pop music.
We’ve taken to calling it progressive pop - something that’s catchy at its core but also expresses some of our wilder musical fantasies,” says guitarist Kaarel Raud, “I hope it inspires a sense of discovery and an appetite for some curry.”
The album is the result of a nearly 2-year creative process from the band’s very first musical steps and through their journey into becoming a cohesive unit. The nine songs included in the LP include the critically acclaimed singles that introduced Neon Fir to the Estonian scene, such as the heartbreak anthem “Overthoughts” and the post-punk inspired “Happy Hour”. The majority of the record has been made in collaboration with producer Hyrr Innokent Vainola (known from local indie darlings Ouu and Seltskond Pargis), who describes the music as “the well-understood schematics of pop and prog being set ablaze and remodelled into the blueprint for something new and brave.” For the opening track “Happy Hour” the band has collaborated on production with one of their idols, renowned guitarist and composer Karl Petti.
Musician Robert Linna (Lexsoul Dancemachine, Elephants From Neptune) describes the album as such: “The music has an unmistakably 80’s sense of style - pastel jackets, loose ties - but it’s bewitching in a way that takes me to places I have yet to see. It’s a dreamlike veil that’s all-encompassing, like sailing on crystal-clear waters in a warm breeze, where unexpected surprises await behind every horizon.”
Neon Fir’s debut album is released on Friday, 3 December on all streaming services as well as - with respect to the band’s 80s inspirations - cassette tape. Vinyl records will follow in spring 2022.
Neon Fir will present the album live on 9 December at Uus Laine in Tallinn with support from Kelly Vask.
Neon Fir is an Eastern-European prog-pop spectacle in which five eclectic personalities expose their own unusual sphere of harmony. With a blend of progressive soul rhythms and vocals with 80’s Soviet and Western synthscapes, Neon Fir aims to create otherworldly pop music for future cosmic wavelengths yet to be discovered. Neon Fir is Eeva Trei on vocals, Miina Adermann on keyboards and backing vocals, Kaarel Raud on guitar, Paul-Gunnar Loorand on bass guitar and Harald Soosalu on drums.
