Ukrainian bandura virtuoso Darja Leleko and Latvian cellist Kāris Auzāns have collaborated to create a special concert program titled "Spogulis spogulī," aiming to present six out of ten concerts to the residents of Riga and its guests at symbolically chosen locations across various neighbourhoods of the city.
These concerts will revolve around the main theme of the "Riga Summer of Courage and Joy": "Courage and joy are born when we meet."
Schedule:
Two concerts are planned for an important date in Latvia, the 23rd of August – the day of remembrance for the victims of Stalinism and Nazism:
- Strazdumuiža Park by Lake Jugla at 4:00 P.M.
- House of Congress opposite the Russian Embassy at 6:00 P.M.
On the 24th of August, Ukraine's Independence Day, the musicians will hold two concerts:
- Grīziņkalns Park at 4:00 P.M.
- Klusais Dārzs on Jēkabpils Street at 6:00 P.M.
The last two concerts of the program are scheduled for the 31st of August:
- Dzegužkalns at 4:00 P.M.
- Arkadija Park at 6:00 P.M.
This musical duet is defined by courage and unity. Bandurist Darja herself expressed that the instrument symbolizes her struggle. These concerts also serve as a reminder that the war is ongoing and that our support for Ukrainians remains essential.
During the concerts, the duo will perform a mix of Latvian and Ukrainian folk music, Ukrainian-Jewish folk music, Ukrainian spiritual music, and original compositions by Kārlis Auzāns. Darja Leleko deeply appreciates Latvia's support for Ukraine and takes great joy in singing Latvian songs and playing Latvian folk music on the bandura, Ukraine's national instrument.
The concerts are open to everyone free of charge and are made possible with co-financing from the Riga City Council as part of the 2023 Riga Summer Culture Program.
