From 23 to 30 April 2023, the 34th Tallinn International Jazzkaar Festival will welcome exciting performers from both Europe and the U.S. and also present Estonia’s most remarkable jazz musicians. The festival hub is once again set up in Telliskivi Creative City with Vaba Lava and Fotografiska Tallinn as the main concert venues. Tickets here.
The first artists announced are five-time Grammy nominee The Baylor Project and six-time Grammy nominee, legendary guitarist Mike Stern with his band. The entire festival programme will be announced in the first days of February.
“As fitting to a festival in UNESCO City of Music, Jazzkaar’s first announced artists are the true jazz legends and currently the most sought-after musicians. The festival will welcome The Baylor Project, which has made a quick rise in the jazz scene and is currently nominated for the Grammy Award. Also, the audience will be surely delighted by the legendary guitarist Mike Stern performing in Estonia again,” Anne Erm introduces the festival in spring.
The American band The Baylor Project has risen to the elite of the jazz world in recent years and is currently one of the most sought-after jazz ensembles. Outstanding live performances have earned them great acclaim around the world, whether they are performing to the thousands of listeners at big festivals or in cosy jazz clubs. The core of the ensemble are husband and wife, singer Jean Baylor and drummer Marcus Baylor with their extraordinary musicality, detailed technical baggage and stylish stage presence. The Baylor Project is nominated for a 2023 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album with their LP The Evening Live at Apparatus. Marcus also received a Grammy nomination for Best Improvised Jazz Solo as a drummer.
After a pause of 22 years Mike Stern will be performing at Jazzkaar Festival again with his band to celebrate his 70th birthday! Stern is an unsurpassed master of connecting different musical languages with natural melodiousness, combining the energy of rock, exciting rhythmicity, the softness of fusion and the brightness of Latin jazz in his unique style of expression. He has collaborated with numerous top jazz artists and gained wider recognition when playing with Miles Davis and Jaco Pastorius. At the request of the audience he is coming to Estonia again, this time with his band of true jazz stars: his wife, vocalist-guitarist-songwriter Leni Stern, Grammy-nominated drummer Dennis Chambers, acclaimed saxophonist Bob Franceschini and Vietnamese-Danish bassist Chris Minh Doky.
