Tallinn Music Week's Festival Guide: what to see & hear

April's hottest event in music promises to be Tallinn Music Week festival on 3rd – 7th of April. It will offer diverse programme including City Festival with many acitivities available for free, Music Festival with 165 different artists to explore and Conference part, which will gather music industry members from all over the world. bobe.me dived deep into the TMW's programme and here's our picks on what to see & hear. City Festival, 3—7 April

TMW’s city programme offers free daytime explorations from art to cuisine and kids programme, invites to take part in heated public discussions and introduces diverse neighbourhoods and atmospheres throughout the city.

This includes free daytime gigs by TMW artists in unconventional venues across Tallinn. Experience the sounds of Kitty Florentine (EE), Maris Pihlap (EE), Miss Molly (FI), Sudden Lights (LV), and others as they perform amidst the city's distinctive atmosphere.

Art enthusiasts are in for a treat with TMW's art programme, featuring exhibitions by local and international artists. Dive into the contemporary art scene with the ECADC Gallery Tour. Hop aboard a dedicated cost-free bus to explore various galleries showcasing cutting-edge works and meet the talented minds behind them. See art tour's schedule.

Engage in thought-provoking talks at TMW's public discussions, where ideas flow freely and diverse perspectives collide in a friendly and lively atmosphere. Join the conversation at Nobel Hall on April 6th, as experts explore the theme of "Creative Culture Making: The City as a Canvas," in collaboration with Burning Man and HALL.

For music enthusiasts and collectors, don't miss the TMW 2024 Record Fair at Baltic Station Market, where local movers and shakers gather to sell and exchange vinyl, CDs, and other music memorabilia overlooking the old town.

Music Festival, 4—6 April

Enjoy multi-genre line-up from all over Europe and beyond in Tallinn's best venues. The line-up showcases 165 artists from 35 countries from Europe, North and South America, East Asia, Africa, Australia and Oceania. We've picked some of our favourites, which will offer great mix of genres - pop, electronica, jazz, indie, funk as well as experimental and avante-garde music.

Võnge Festival Stage, Sat 06.04 / 19:00 at Von Krahl (former Vaba Lava)

TMW 2024: Võnge Festival Stage at Von Krahl performance centre in the Telliskivi Creative City presents an international line-up of artists from indie to pop-punk and RnB. On the stage will perform SUN from France who owns brutal pop genre, Norwegian Beharie whose expression is deeply rooted in indie and soul, blend of electronic and jazz music will be offered by Kutu.

Baltic scene will be covered by one of the hottest indie pop acts from Latvia - Sudden Lights and Estonian artists - Alonette, Bedwetters, Curly Strings and The Boondocks.

SODA POP, Sat 06.04 / 19:30 at F-Hoone

Look for vaporous rhymes, glitches and new ideal pop formulas, and celebrate the young generation at Soda Pop. Line-up features Polish AV conceptualists Franek Warzywa and Młody Budda, Scottish Alexander Romance equipped with cloud rap poses and emo slogans, K-pop & J-pop sound stylist MISS MOLLY from Finland, Estonian young ones – manna, maria kallastu, margiiela – start their names with a common lowercase letter and back it up with big singles, tons of talent and sensibilities from alternative RnB to off-kilter, adventurous sound pools.

STATION NARVA STAGE, Sat 06.04 / 19:30 at Paavli Culture Factory

The Station Narva showcase will bring the essence of its mother festival to Tallinn. Notable foreign guests include award-winning artist and activist Madame Gandhi from the UK. Finnish indie-soul star Jesse Markin, sleek French Ukrainian lo-fi maverick Aircraft and Hungarian punky-funky-party squad Duckshell.

Estonia is represented by Analogue Quattro from Ida-Virumaa’s former “closed town” Sillamäe and record-breaking electro-pop star NOËP. Get to know NOËP in the interview bobe.me had with him a couple of years ago when “No Man Is An Island” was released.

ZENITH, Thu 04.04 / 19:00 at Independent Dance Stage (Sõltumatu Tantsu Lava)

A unique three-dimensional listening experience, which offers the Ambisonic Touring Dome, a specific sound system with a large number of speakers placed above and around the listeners on a geodesic sphere structure.

The four-hour concert (the audience is allowed to come and go between the pieces) will present an overview of acousmatic sound works created in this format by both Estonian and foreign authors. In such a 360-degree and three-dimensional sound space, composers try to create a special acoustic feeling of "being in it" for the listeners, which is also called immersion.

CINDY & KATE, Fri 05.04 / 19:00 at Kivi Paber Käärid

Embark on a journey through the vibrant Baltic culture of diverse acts who seek alternative pathways in our Algorithm-driven era - from indie mavericks to DIY punks and avant-garde adventurers. Surrender to the untapped, dance to the ultimate quiet storms, and witness fruits singing!

From Lithuania hail Jonas Šarkus of cult band Solo Ansamblis’s fame, introducing his audiovisual alter ego punktò, as well as philosophical post-punk project AKLI. Estonian talent is represented by producer Maris Pihlap and artpop duo MEGAMEGA Superstar. Latvian punk punch will be delivered by Oranžās Brīvdienas and Waterflower will show us how to be the musical embodiment of Mother Earth.

Conference, 5—6 April

Music-related topics from panels and workshops to inspiring discussions and visions for the future. The TMW Conference is a key meeting place for Baltic-Nordic music industries and a networking platform for our region to get connected to the global music community.

From Deserts to Cities: The Story of Burning Man, Fri 05.04. / 14:30

The biggest party on Planet Earth, Burning Man, is devoted to creating a self-sustaining community, a culture of possibility, and a network of dreamers and doers. The story behind this impossible dream will be told by Burning Man Project’s Associate Director of City Planning Bryant Tan.

Where IS The Party? Politics & Pleasures of Glocal Club Culture, Fri 05.04. / 16:00

Joe Muggs is a music writer for the likes of Mixmag, WIRE, FACT and Bandcamp Daily and the author of ‘Bass, Mids, Tops: An Oral History of Soundsystem Culture’ (2019), and ‘Crosstown Rebels – 20 Years Of Madness, Magic and Music’ (2023). He will moderate a panel about the importance of local micro-scenes in a highly centralised world that features the founder of Tallinn’s Club HALL Elena Natale and the founder of Vilnius’ Opium Club Vidmantas Čepkauskas.

Artistic Freedom - artists in the spotlight, Sat 06.04. / 15:45

This panel turns the microphone towards the voice of the artists. Each of them has paved a unique career path of creating their own voice and identity and paving their own path. The music makers, the entrepreneurs, the marketing masterminds, the DIY rebels, the creative spirits.
